History of mobile or cell phones

It all began with the intention of improving the concept of mobile telephony. This concept use two way radios and is still in use by the modern mobile technology. The fundamental telephony was the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1876. It used the technology that was involved in the telegraph system before it ventured as a network that was manually switched. In the early 1890's a radio communication system was developed by Charles Stevenson to make necessary communications with the lighthouses off the shore. This technology was further developed by Marconi who succeeded in transmitting radio signal over a distance of 2km in 1894 after which Fessenden broadcasted music over the radio in 1906. This was then used for military purposes during the Second World War.

It was after 1940 that the real mobile technology saw its day of light. Motorola, one of the leading cell phone companies of today succeeded in developing a two-way radio which were backpacked and called the pair 'Walkie-Talkie'. It also helped the US military in developing a large two-way radio that was hand held. It was powered by a battery that was in-built. Two engineers belonging to the Soviet Union then tasted success in mounting a mobile phone inside a car which was able to connect to any local telephone network which was placed anywhere within 20 kilometers.

Another couple of Bell Lab engineers Douglas H. Ring and W. Rae Young, in the year 1947 put forth the concept of using hexagonal cells for the mobile phones in vehicles which was later corrected by another Bell Lab engineer Philip Porter that the cell towers would function better if placed at the hexagonal corners than at the center. But there weren't enough technological advancement that complimented this theory. This situation was maintained only until the next set of engineers Richard H. Frenkiel and Joel S. Engel developed the electronic equipment that was required to compliment this concept in 1960's.

In the mean time, in 1957 a young radio engineer from Moscow Leonid Kupriyanovich developed a portable mobile phone and named it LK-1 and also got it patented. In 1969, George Sweigert used an acoustic coupler in a wireless phone which was later patented. But the disadvantage of the early mobile phones was that it could function only within a restricted area.
